Fifth Grade Curriculum at a Glance
Math - There is a heavy focus on conceptual understanding of fractions, decimals, problem solving, geometry, and measurement. All strands will involve the use of all four mathematical operations, as well as vocabulary comprehension and written explanation of solutions (Common Core). Students will be expected to solve problems using words, pictures, and numbers. Students should be able to write out their responses, as well as explain the reasoning for their solution.
Students will also complete a monthly math assignment by applying mathematical skills to real world situations. The program is called "Survival Math" and the due dates have been preselected for the year so that you can plan ahead if necessary. There are 60 different choices, as well as a free choice item that can be approved by me in advance.
Reading and Language Arts- Common Core Short Reads, ACT: Accessing Complex Texts, CLOSE reading activities (read and reread), vocabulary (Wordly Wise/ Vocabulary Achievers/nonfiction content enriched vocabulary), practice books, guided reading novels, read alouds, Houghton Mifflin anthology, Literature Circles, ability grouped reading instruction (DIRT- Dive Into Reading Time), book reports, and research.
Writing- Writing is mostly integrated within the curriculum. Students should be fluent writers so they can express themselves in an understandable way. Students are expected to write independently and proficiently in these areas: opinion piece writing on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons, informativepieces that examine topics and convey important information clearly, and narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events. Students are assessed in: written expression, organization, writing mechanics (sentence structure, grammar, punctuation), and spelling.
Science- Fifth grade standards cover:, states of matter, atoms, molecular structure, astronomy, meteorology, and several human body systems.
***Students will be creating a science fair project to be on display during open house.
Social Studies- We will be studying our country's history. We will begin with the various theories on how the first inhabitants came to live in America. From here students will learn about different tribes and their regions, explorers, colonies, the American Revolution, our government, and westward expansion.
Oral Language Skills- Speech Masters-Students learn to present prepared speeches. They will evaluate each other, which helps strengthen their understanding of the speech requirements. The three speech topics are: Persuasive (Opinion), Informative (state speech), and Demonstrative (end of the year, after testing).
